Preventing and Treating Pimple Scars
Severe or prolonged acne can lead to semi-permanent pimple scars that in turn can impact on a person’s self esteem. What can you do to prevent them, or treat them if you have them?
Preventing pimple scars
The most common reason for pimple scars is squeezing them before they have come to a head. It may temporarily solve the problem of a gross looking zit, but longer term the skin will be left damaged.
Although you can pop pimples, this should not be attempted until they have a completely formed head. You have to get rid of the pus through the surface of the pimple rather than run the risk of any infection being squeezed back into your skin. To do this, use a sterilized needle to burst the head and then wipe away the pus with a clean cloth or tissue. Make sure you apply anti-bacterial wash or ointment afterwards to prevent infection.
Another preventative measure is never to pick at scabs. They will fall off when they are ready to, after the skin underneath has healed. Don’t be tempted to scratch if they get itchy.
Treating pimple scars
Most scars fade with time, but there are products you can use to speed up the process.
Vitamin E oil is known to be beneficial in reducing the appearance of scars. It can be bought in a bottle or capsules; if you have capsules you can prick them and use the liquid directly on to your scars. Rub the vitamin E oil into the scar area once a day for about two months.
Aloe vera is another natural healer. It contains skin lightening properties so will help reduce and blend the scar tissue with your skin tones.
If your scars are extensive, covering a large area of your skin, then you may want to consider laser treatment. Although this is an expensive option, and not painless, it can be very effective. It will take a few sessions before the treatment is completed.
