Acne Scar Treatment

Acne wreaks havoc with the skin, and even when successfully treated, can leave scars of varying degrees of severity.  Often people carry these scars for years.  So it’s worthwhile looking into various acne scar treatments that can help improve the appearance of the skin.  There are several different methods of acne scar treatment mentioned here, some of which need to be done by a beauty therapist, and one you can try at home.

It needs to be understood at the outset that acne scars, depending on their severity, may not always be completely removed; acne scar treatment can, however, go a long way towards repairing the skin, and help make the marks much less visible.

A popular acne scar treatment is a chemical peel which takes off layers of skin.  This can help with mild scarring as well as treating existing acne.  Do your research thoroughly if you decide on this type of treatment.  Look at the different types of chemical peel available and make sure you get the procedure done at a reputable clinic.  Be aware that, while many find this acne scar treatment very effective, it’s not suitable for everyone.  It can be painful and costly, as several treatments may be needed.  A milder form that can be used at home is a lactic acid peel, which many find to be effective in removing red marks.

Another acne scar treatment available is dermabrasion.  Again, this is a surgical procedure where the top layers of the skin are scrubbed away, revealing smoother skin underneath.  It’s best for lesser scars, reducing their appearance, but may not be suitable for those with darker skin or deep scarring.  Microdermabrasion is the home method, but will not help deep scarring.

Laser resurfacing can be more beneficial for shallower scars, but this can depend on the amount of work you get done.  Laser acne scar treatment can also be very expensive.

Two more recent acne scar treatments to come to the fore are augmentation and punch methods.  Augmentation involves injecting a substance, usually collagen, under the skin to plump up the crater.  It’s a procedure that doesn’t need recovery time, but it is temporary and needs to be redone every few months.  Punch methods, of which there are three, involve removal of the scar; the skin may need a few weeks to heal.

Often, two or more of the above methods are used in conjunction to make a more effective treatment.  Talk to your dermatologist about the various procedures, the benefits and risks.  Read online forums to see how others have fared after undergoing the treatments.  I’d recommend this one.  Above all, research thoroughly before you decide which is the best acne scar treatment for you.
